A settlement agreement is a contractual agreement between an employer and an employee in which the employee gives up most of his rights to pursue legal claims against his employer. In exchange for giving up these rights the employer normally agrees to pay a sum of money to the employee. For such an agreement to be legally binding the employee must have independent legal advice from a qualified adviser.
